The library is a place to keep sets of specifications which you plan to use in future projects. It is more typically used by firms who specify or sell set product lines that can be entered beforehand and maintained by a designated "librarian" (see note below). To work with it:
Since the Library uses vendor and catalog numbers for identification, as opposed to project-specific IDs, it does not retain the Spec ID. You may wish to record quantity requirements, if any, in the additional description field when creating library specs for items needing additional components like fabric. The library can also be used to store prototype specs (templates) that can be used to pre-fill repetitive information that is unique to a certain type of product or pre-fill certain labels (like "Repeat:") that serve as reminders of information needed for a complete specification. This approach is covered more extensively in the section "Prototype-oriented Data Entry" and in the reference section for the Library List. Most design firms do not use the Library for anything beyond templates, because much greater efficiency can be found in using prototype projects that include complete rooms and in simply importing desired specs from previous projects. Be sure to read Prototype-oriented Data Entry for more about alternatives to using the Library for typical design work. |
